Effects of neem oil on adult Sitophilus oryzae L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) acoustic activity patterns and mortality
Research Entomologist University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan
Acoustic methods were used to observe the time course of survival of Sitophilus oryzae L. and Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) over a 12-week period on wheat kernels exposed to commercial neem oil at concentrations 0 to 100 or 0-40 ml/kg respectively. The rates of movement and feeding sounds were monitored using an AED-2010 insect detection system by inserting a metal probe into 473 ml ml glass jars where 30 S. oryzae adults were placed in 88 g of wheat or 40 T. castaneum adults were placed in 50 g of crushed wheat. Insects survived in clean grain, but sound rates declined rapidly after exposure to the highest doses of neem.
