Vector-borne diseases are some of the most prevalent problems facing society today. In response to these problems mosquito control professionals have deployed insecticdes and repellents to protect the public. As these compounds have been repeatedly used time and time again, field populations of mosquitoes have developed resistance to these classes of insecticides and repellents. The development of field resistance has tasked researchers with developing a new tool for the mosquito control toolbox. Our lab has devoted many years to the development of novel bioratonal spatial repellents based off of natural products. Recent research has led us to synthesize a group of biorational compounds that has proven to be effective against three medically-relevant genera: Culex, Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes. These compounds have also shown to be effective against strains of mosquitoes that have proven to be resistant to commonly used classes of insecticides and repellents. These compounds can now be moved towards the development of a product that can be deployed in field situatons where resistant mosquitoes may be present.
