The Boyd Deep Canyon Research Station (Deep Canyon), located in the southern California inland desert, has a collection of various Culicoides biting midge species. Miniature Center of Disease Control (CDC) suction traps baited with dry ice and ultraviolet (UV) light respectively were used to collect Culicoides species in the Deep Canyon. Culicoides sampling was conducted at two locations to represent the range of geographical environment of the Deep Canyon, from the natural habitat at the entrance of the canyon site to the alluvial plain site which has a close association with human activities. Trap types and locations were compared to show the diversity and abundance of Culicoides collection. The result would provide information on the distribution of Culicoides spp. in the Deep Canyon and help choose appropriate trap types for various sampling purposes.
