Diversity statements are often used by academic units and individuals to articulate the value of diversity and communicate commitments to foster inclusive working environments. In this talk, I will discuss the main purpose of writing diversity statements, why they are important, and how individuals and academic units can work on their development. While there is no right or wrong way to writing diversity statements, I will share my experience on what works, doesn't work, and what is missing to make statements an integral part of the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the academy.
