Scientists usually write for an audience of other scientists. While publishing in peer-reviewed journals is vital, scientists could potentially reach a broader audience, including students and teachers at all educational levels. Reaching more diverse readers would increase scientific awareness in the general population, and this knowledge could potentially lead to positive changes in science policy and funding. Unfortunately, simplifying language is not always a simple task. This presentation will provide concrete writing tools for making research readable to non-scientific audiences, including how to identify purpose and audience; how to simplify syntax and diction; how to collaborate with university communicators; and even how to use Instagram to announce research findings.
