Dr. Simon Leather was scheduled to present a talk in this symposium before his passing. We’d like to recognize Dr. Leather’s contribution to entomology and science communication; his tireless research, outreach, and advocacy for insects is an inspiration to all entomologists. Although we didn’t know Dr. Leather personally, we deeply appreciated his willingness to participate in our symposium.
Dr. Leather’s work on IPM and urban ecology is especially relevant now. His studies on the use of biological controls in crop systems offers a path away from harmful pesticides while maintaining protection of economically important crops. Further, his interest in urban ecology helped induce a paradigm shift for conservation by highlighting biodiversity in urban areas.
We express our deepest condolences to Dr. Leather’s family, friends, and colleagues at this time. His passion for science and insects has inspired countless people and his legacy will continue to inspire.
