Asian bean thrips, Megalurothrips usitatus, was confirmed in south Florida in March 2020. Presently Asian bean thrips has not been detected north of Lake Okeechobee in Florida. Asian bean thrips primarily attacks legumes. In Asia it is a pest of many leguminous food staples, including soybean and peanut. In Florida Asian bean thrips has caused significant losses to the state's snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) industry, causing growers to apply insecticides earlier and more frequently than in the past. Asian bean thrips has also caused significant losses in specialty legumes in south Florida, including lablab bean (Lablab purpureus) and pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan). Current efforts focus on evaluation of conventional and biopesticides for management of Asian bean thrips, and assessment of host plant preferences.
