Nearly 20 years after its detection in North America, emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis, Coleoptera: Buprestidae, continues to spread across forests in the Eastern United States (US) causing widespread mortality and decline of ash. An understanding of the variation in the long-term response of ash can help inform effective management approaches, which vary depending on the stage of EAB invasion. Using monitoring plots established by the USDA Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program, changes in the density of ash in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, where EAB first became established, were analyzed in order to establish a baseline for determining impact trajectories in recently invaded states. Inventory plots were measured three times, beginning in 2001-2006 and ending in 2012-2017, and were categorized based on stage of EAB invasion. Quantifying the cumulative changes in ash forests since the arrival EAB will provide a more complete understanding of its impacts in North America and can assist managers in addressing predicted impacts to forests in advance of EAB’s arrival.
