Biodiversity of arthropods in an exceptionally biodiverse sub-tropical ecosystem dominated by longleaf pine

Longleaf pine ecosystems are fire-driven, biodiversity rich, and endangered systems in the southern USA. To assess the temporal and spatial variability of arthropod communities, we initiated the Terrestrial Arthropod Biodiversity Systems (TABS) project in a 12,000 hectare longleaf pine ecosystem at The Jones Center at Ichauway, located in southwestern Georgia, USA. Starting in 2020, we established 60 permanent plots in four key ecological communities that are embedded in this ecosystem: 1) agriculture; 2) flatwoods; 3) fluvial/dry terrace; and 4) sand ridge/upland. Our bioindicator taxa include bees, ground beetles, and saproxylic beetles; we will compare their biodiversity metrics among differing ecological communities, presence or absence of wiregrass, and time since prescribed burn. A variety of methods including flight intercept, bee bowl, blue vane, and pitfall traps are being deployed for a week three times every summer. We plan to continue sampling for at least 10 years. Although our focus is currently on the Ichauway property, our goal is for the TABS sampling model to be exportable to other areas to compare across habitats, ecosystems, and even regions under continued anthropogenic threats to native biodiversity.
