High-low dose response bioassay to predict field insecticide efficacy to whiteflies in Georgia

The sweet potato whitefly Bemisia tabaci is one of the most economically important pests for vegetable and cotton in Georgia. The main control strategy is the use of chemical insecticides, which requires management to avoid selection for resistance. A bioassay for predicting multiple insecticide response could be important for such management programs. The objective of this work was to compare laboratory bioassays to field trial efficacy results for multiple insecticides used to control B. tabaci. For the field experiment, a replicated pumpkin trial consisted of high labeled rates of common whitefly insecticides compared to a check. Simultaneously, laboratory bioassays were carried with adult whiteflies collected from the field prior to the field insecticide treatment. A high-low dosage was based on the maximum labeled rate and a tenth of this, respectively. The parameters of the trials were mortality at 24h after application in the field and number of eggs and nymphs after two weeks in the laboratory. From all insecticides treated, Venom (dinotefuran), Sivanto Prime (flupyradifurone) and Exirel (cyantraniliprole) presented higher efficacy in field conditions, and the high-low bioassay effectively predicted the field response. The adult bioassay did not predict efficacy of products that targeted immature whiteflies (nymphs and eggs) only. A rapid nymph-bioassay for these products is under development. Bioassays are critical for determining resistance status of whiteflies in Georgia, but also could be a management tool for predicting efficacy before a spray treatment is applied.
