Impacts of soybean aphid and Japanese beetle or artificial defoliation on spectral reflectance of soybean canopies

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, is a major invasive pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill. The Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman, is an emerging concern in Minnesota soybean. Near infra-red reflectance has been identified as promising for ground- and drone-based remote sensing for soybean aphid. However, it remains unknown if co-occurring insect pests affect soybean spectral reflectance and therefore our ability to detect aphids. Thus, field experiments were established in Saint Paul and Rochester, MN during 2019 and 2020 to assess the effects of soybean aphid and Japanese beetle feeding individually and combined on soybean spectral reflectance. Artificial defoliation was included in 2020 to simulate higher defoliation levels. Ground-based hyperspectral measurements, aphid counts and defoliation estimates were obtained on two field-dates in 2019 and 5 field-dates in 2020. Regression analyses were performed to assess the effects of these stressors on canopy reflectance of soybean. Japanese beetle defoliation (≤ 5%) was found to increase red-edge, but not near infra-red reflectance of soybean plants. Thus, typical levels of Japanese beetle defoliation is unlikely to affect the detection of soybean aphids with remote sensing. However, more severe defoliation (33%) decreased reflectance at near infra-red and therefore could affect remote sensing for aphids.
