Laboratory Manager Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District Indio, California
The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District is centerd within a small media market. Though the focus of our work is mosquitoes and red imported fire ants, occurences of insects that are unusual in the minds of our residents can quickly become something to which we need to respond. Predicting what will be the next hot topic picked up by the community or the media is not easy, but we can highlight common threads of what common questions will arise and what works for our community to highlight what they can do. Examining some of the common themes that lead to insects becoming a big news story, this presentation will serve as an introduction to the symposium.
