Whole-system IPM means herbicides too: A closer look at non-target effects on predators

Despite the potential of herbicides to harm natural enemies, almost no research has been done to determine non-target effects of these chemicals on predatory arthropods. This presentation will provide an overview of ongoing work by the Schmidt-Jeffris lab to evaluate potential impacts of herbicides on key predators in a variety of cropping systems. In general, glufosinate, oxyfluorfen, and paraquat were toxic to most natural enemies. This is particularly problematic given that glyphosate is likely to be replaced by glufosinate or paraquat in cropping systems where there is movement away from glyphosate due to consumer concern.
