Canine detection of whitefly-transmitted vegetable viruses

Whitefly-transmitted viruses cause increasingly significant economic losses in vegetable crops in the southeastern U.S. Squash vein yellowing virus (SqVYV), cucurbit leaf crumple virus (CuLCrV) and cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus (CYSDV) are predominantly problems in watermelon and squash. CuLCrV is also an issue in snap bean. Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) remains a problem in tomato. Accurate diagnosis of these viruses is a critical aspect of successful disease management. Molecular and serological diagnostic tests are commonly used but can be costly, labor intensive and time consuming. Although highly accurate, molecular and serological diagnostic tests can be confounded by sampling issues (i.e., it is impossible to sample all plants for testing by these means). Canine detection of plant pathogens is a novel approach recently demonstrated to offer rapid, sensitive and reliable diagnosis. Since canines holistically sample the entire plant, sampling issues can be avoided while maintaining accuracy.
