The developed landscape, including urban and suburban habitat, is the fastest growing form of land-cover in the United States. Urbanization has significant impacts on wildlife. Research shows that while urban habitats can support an abundant and diverse bee community, exceeding that found in rural and even “natural” habitats, other research shows that urbanization reduces bee abundance and diversity, and in particular, results in a loss of specialist bee species. Rutgers gardens is a public garden which cultivates native plants and encourages conservation of native pollinators. In this study we assessed the diversity and abundance of native bee species at three locations across the Rutgers gardens. We surveyed the locations from May to July of 2021 with bi-weekly collections and identified each insect to family. Abundance and diversity was recorded and this information could prove useful when making decisions on plants and structures at various sites and may serve to increase the conservation of our native pollinators in urban locations. Future studies will focus on the findings of this study to engage the public in conservation efforts and native pollinator awareness.
