There are a little more than 2,600 described species of armored scale insects (Hemiptera: Diaspididae). While there’s little ecological differentiation across the family, genetic diversity of the group is high. This makes the probability of cryptic diversity high. In this study, we designed and tested a probeset to target approximately 3,000 loci using methods designed for target enrichment of ultraconserved elements. The molecular markers targeted by this probe will provide finer resolution to delimit armored scale insect species.
