Assistant Professor University of Nebraska Lincoln, Nebraska
In an effort to maintain a learning community while rapidly moving from in-person to online classrooms, many stumbled to leverage new technology tools to get across the finish line during the Spring 2020 semester. But the marathon kept going. However, barriers have the capacity to foster creativity and the COVID-19 pandemic has provided such a pressure. The ever-present element of risk and the now precious commodity of synchronous sessions pushed the “resident” section of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Insect Biology course to rebuild its foundation. This presentation will detail the journey of a lecture-laden resident section to a flipped web conference classroom. Various technologies and tools were leveraged, from the bells and whistles of Zoom and VidGrid to Google spreadsheets, classroom polling software, and even cooking supplies. Future plans for this course are the silver lining of this recent upheaval.
