Academic Specialist Michigan State University East Lansing, Michigan
The COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequent necessity of social distancing, has greatly transformed most interactions in higher education. As an instructor, an outreach coordinator, and an undergraduate academic advisor in Entomology at Michigan State University, I interact with students every day, and found my work completely changed. This shift to a virtual format for classes, meetings, and outreach events presented an opportunity for exploring different tools and formats for virtual teaching and engagement within the limits imposed by the pandemic. In this presentation, I will outline my approach to interacting with large and small numbers of students and the public in virtual settings and highlight the tools and strategies that I found to be most effective.
