As news stories go, periodical cicadas have legs, six to be exact. They seem to pique most everyone’s interest like no other insect story. Whether it is the din of three simultaneous choruses or their sheer numbers, they tend to drive some people nearly looney and others to pure delight. Periodical cicadas might be the perfect entomological storyline. Since they predictably arrive on schedule, the anticipation has time to build to a climax that lasts for weeks. Entomologists are in high demand as writers far and wide try to get a foot up on the competition with a unique perspective on these most fascinating creatures. This infographic attempts to capture the enthusiasm and interest of the media in sharing information about periodical cicadas with the public.
